Research Experience for Undergradutes

The OTS Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program funded by the National Science Foundation kicked off last week. These 22 students from the continental US, Puerto Rico, Hawai'i, and Guam, along with two OTS-funded Costa Rican students, traveled to La Selva to begin a summer of fieldwork. This year's REU cohort, guided by 14 mentors, will spend the next nine weeks conducting individual research projects across a range of topics from glass frog behavior, to plant latex chemistry, to effects of leafcutter ants on carbon cycling (and many other topics!). Students spent the first week attending orientation workshops and conducting pilot fieldwork; this week will end with a formal proposal symposium, followed by six weeks of data collection and a final two weeks for data analysis and preparation of final oral presentations and written reports. Everyone is looking forward to a fun summer of tropical science!
